Tips for Camping out of Your Truck

Make the most of your truck on your next camping trip.

Summer is the best time of the year to take your truck out on a road trip and spend some time camping in the great outdoors. For many people, camping out of their truck is a cheaper, more convenient option than pitching a tent. While not as glamorous as an RV or a tent, truck bed camping allows hunters and adventurers to beat the competition to some of the best spots. Here are a few tips for transforming your truck into a mobile living space.

Keep it Clean

The most important thing to keep in mind when camping from a truck bed is that you need to keep the interior space clean. Being out in the country can be messy. You don’t want to drag rain, mud, dirt, blood, feathers or other debris into your truck. Seal up the space as much as possible when you’re on the road. Replace worn seals and tighten up the hardware holding the cap to the truck. You may want to crack a window for ventilation at night, but windows should be kept shut when you’re cruising over dirt or gravel roads. It’s a good idea to bring trash bags for storing muddy boots and other dirty equipment. A broom or a handheld vacuum can also be handy. A clean space will make camping from your truck easier and more comfortable.

Manage Space

Space is a limited commodity when it comes to camping from your truck bed. Consider building in some kind of sleeping or storage unit. A raised platform above your hunting or fishing equipment is a practical solution. Organize your camping gear, clothing, cooking equipment and anything else you’ll be taking into waterproof containers. This will help you save space and give you more room for sleeping.

Essentials

Running water may not always be available from where you’re camping. Bring a large water can and aluminum baking pans for washing. It’s also handy to have something that will glow in the dark so you can have some light without attracting a lot of bugs. Always make sure your truck is outfitted with a first aid kit.
